Delivery Nightmare: The Rider Ended the Ride and Carried My Rings Away

Your cousin's wedding is around the corner, and you've promised to bring her rings to the bridal shower.

Pretty straightforward, right?

But what do you do when the Uber bails out on you, leaving you without any trace of information or the rings?

Let's find out in this unforgettable experience of Teejay, a content marketing pro who knows about online shopping.

Quote: The buzz is back, and we welcome you to “My Delivery Nightmare,” where we share the craziest and most frustrating delivery stories from Nigerians.

Do stick around 😉

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your typical logistics needs?

Hi, my name is Teejay, and I am a Content marketing professional. I buy a lot of things online, and I've had a fair share of the company's delivery guys misbehaving.

Because of that, I started using Uber packages to handle my deliveries instead—they pick up my items and bring them straight to me.

How often do you use delivery services for personal or business purposes?

It really depends on what I’m buying or if I need to send something to someone. Sometimes, I use delivery services about three times a month, but there are also times when I don’t use them at all.

Can you describe your delivery nightmare experience in detail?

Oh, this was such a crazy experience! 😂 My cousin was getting married in June, and she ordered her wedding rings from a brand in Ilupeju. But here’s the problem—she lives in Ajah.

The brand told her that all their delivery guys were busy, and if she didn’t get the rings that Saturday, we’d have to wait until the next week, which was her wedding week. So, you can imagine how stressed she was.

My cousin messaged me, asking if I was near Ilupeju so we could get a dispatch rider to deliver the rings to me. Then, I could bring them to her bridal shower the next day.

I told her, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”

I booked an Uber and had the driver pick up the rings. He was supposed to deliver them to me at UNILAG. Everything seemed fine until it wasn’t.

The rider got to WAEC and called me, but I was busy and couldn’t pick up immediately. I called him back a minute later; he started yelling at me for not answering. I tried to calm him down, but he just hung up and ended the ride.

Ahh, mogbe 🙆🏾‍♀️—my sister’s wedding rings.

I kept calling him, but he wouldn’t pick up. I was freaking out and crying so badly. In my hysterical state, I asked a friend who was with me to help. My friend called him, and this time, he answered. We decided to put on a little drama to scare him.

My friend pretended to be a police officer and told him that if he didn’t deliver the rings within the next hour, they’d track him down and arrest him.

I can only imagine how scared he was. He called me back almost immediately, speaking so politely this time, and promised to deliver the rings soon. But even then, I still had to wait for over an hour.

Finally, he showed up, and I got the rings. But wow, that experience was something else—I never want to go through that again.

When did you realize something was wrong with the delivery?

I realized something was wrong when he called to shout at me. The Uber app said he’d be at my location in 5 minutes, so when he ended the call, I just assumed he was still on his way.

But after a while, I checked the app again and saw that the ride had already been ended—it had been marked as completed for some time.

How did you react when you discovered the issue?

I was scared, my heart was beating loudly, and I was crying. How did I want to explain that I couldn't find the rings I promised to bring along to the bridal shower?

I was already thinking about what my aunt would say if she found out I lost her daughter's wedding rings, and boy, that scenario didn't play out nicely in my head.

How did the situation affect your plans?

Imagine waiting over an hour after your event ends because you want to get a delivery. I was already so tired that day and wanted to get home, but I still had to wait for a delivery that should have been concluded.

Were you able to find a solution, or did the issue remain unresolved?

The use of threat was the solution, and I'm glad it got the job done.

What lessons did you learn from this experience?

I learnt that many are mad and few are roaming. Because why would a grown-up man be yelling at me and then get mad that I told him to calm down?

It also taught me the importance of having a good network because my friend was Superman of the day.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about your delivery nightmare or your thoughts on logistics services?

After all this, the rider didn’t update the Uber app to show that I had paid him. For over a month, I kept seeing a banner on the app saying I owed money, even though it had already been paid. It took me a while to sort that out with Uber.

Right now, I don’t have much to say about logistics services, but I think Uber should make it easier for users to report and resolve issues.

Oh, and if you're delivering something with services like Uber or Bolt, always call the rider off the app. This way, you can get their number in case anything dramatic happens.
