2020 has been a challenging year for us all but we know that tough times don't last but tough people do. The world needs healing and we can all help in our little way. Making a difference doesn't mean we have to find the cure of cancer or AIDS but affecting lives positively no matter how small it seems. Here are ten small things you can do to make the world a better place.

Give a compliment: Who doesn't like a compliment? A comment on a new hairstyle, dress or shoe. Pass a compliment to a friend or stranger today.

Smile and say hello to a stranger: It is common to smile at someone and get one in return. A smile helps us open for a good conversation. You never know the effect your smile would do for that person.

Donate to a worthy cause: It might seem we don't have enough for ourselves, but no matter how financially low we think we are, there are people with worse situations. It is best to share the little you have with people. Search for a worthy cause and give a little token. That little you share can go a long way.

Give your knowledge/skill: If you are cash strapped, you can give of your knowledge. Share the things you know with the people around you. You can find kids or teenagers who can benefit from your expertise.

Mentor someone for free: Mentoring is necessary to ensure we all grow and become better individuals and citizens. You can be a guide to a person who needs help in a field. You don't have to be Richard Branson or Kamala Harris before you become a mentor. You have enough knowledge and depth to guide a young life.

Call a friend and listen attentively: We are all guilty of asking "how are you?" and waiting for a default response. Today, pick up your phone and call a friend and ask "How are you doing?" and listen attentively. Many of your friends might be bottling things up and talking to you might be the therapy they need.

Give a hug: A hug from a loved one helps us feel good about ourselves. Hugs decrease stress hormones and heal feelings of loneliness, anger and isolation. Hugs help build trust and a sense of safety.

Spend quality time with loved ones: Time is an asset, and we must use it wisely. Spending time with loved ones without distractions is something we would cherish forever. In a digital age, it is easy to be distracted with our gadgets but keeping it away and enjoying one's presence is priceless.

Write someone a "Thank you" note: How would you feel if you received a "thank you" note from an old contact appreciating your influence on them? Happy and warm inside? I sure would. We all love being appreciated. Write a "thank you" note to someone today.

Tell someone "I love you": Love is beyond a feeling. Love is how we express ourselves. Saying I love you should be something we say to our kids, spouse and people we cherish. Love is cherished. Cherish someone in your life.
