What are the Prohibited and Restricted Imports in Nigeria?

We recently received an interesting question on our Instagram: "What items can't I ship into Nigeria?" Understanding Nigeria's import regulations is important for anyone looking to ship goods to the country. To help you navigate these rules, we have compiled a detailed list of prohibited and restricted items you should know before shipping to Nigeria.

Nigeria has a comprehensive list of goods that are either prohibited or restricted from importation. These regulations are in place to protect local industries, ensure the safety and health of citizens, and maintain economic stability. Here is an overview of the main items that fall under these categories:

Prohibited Imports

Prohibited imports are items that are completely banned from entering the country. These goods cannot be legally imported under any circumstances. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) enforces these prohibitions to safeguard public health, national security, and moral standards. Examples include weapons, counterfeit goods, and toxic waste.

Restricted Imports

Restricted imports can be imported under certain conditions or with specific limitations. These goods might require special permits, licenses, or adherence to quota systems. The goal is to regulate the quantity and quality of such imports to support local industries and ensure safety standards. Examples include agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, and certain consumer goods.
